You’ll get the hang of compression that way.Ģ)Use a plugin that adds a little saturation or distortion. Take a look at the individual settings for that and try applying them to other compressors.
HOW TO USE SCARBEE BASS REAPER DOWNLOAD
In the meantime, a few broad suggestions:ġ) Google “best free compressor plugins” and download a few of them (I’ll 2nd the MJUC Jr suggestion) At least one is bound to have a preset (not even the “bass” preset necessarily) that will sound good to you. I took this idea from a podcast with engineer Craig Alvin.Ĭould you be more specific as to what you don’t like about your current bass recordings other than you can’t figure out compression? It's basically a crude multi band compressor but there's something about the way the pultec blooms in the low end that I like. There's a sweet spot where the low end fills out without choking the mix or overloading the mix buss too much. Then I limit this hard so it's really consistent (no dynamics), pull the fader all the way down, and start sneaking it up alongside the bass subgroup. So basically you're just getting low end. On a parallel aux (pre-fader send), I use a pultec style plugin and boost 100Hz all the way up, and attenuate 5k all the way down. I might add a little 2kHz at this point as well. Usually sounds nasty solo'd but cuts well in the mix. There are lots of saturation plugins, but I like Decapitator for this.

On the bass subgroup, I high pass at 120Hz and then add distortion/compression/etc as needed to get the midrange of the bass cutting through the mix and sitting where I want.

I like having the three to use in the mix, in case I need a different midrange character than the tone I was working with during tracking. Usually I only end up with a blend of clean DI and either sansmp or amp sim, but sometimes I'll use all three. Now I have three tracks in the mix to blend for the basic bass tone.

Alternatively split the bass signal into a channel strip and work it with the EQģ) A slightly distorted bass tone to give the signal some 'edge' or 'grit'Įach bass track should be should be very different when solo'd, but also be considered a great sounding bass tone on it's own merits. I don't know what tools you have at your disposal, but a lot of pros split the bass signal 3 ways before it hits the DAW, and record them as 3 separate tracks simultaneously:ġ) a 'neutral but defined' tone, typically bass direct to interface via DI that captures a good amount of high frequency detailĢ) a miked cab, which captures more low end.
